Academic guests

Description

Academic guests are scientific employees of domestic or international universities or research institutes. They usually visit ETH Zurich as part of a paid or unpaid sabbatical from their home institution.

Purpose

Academic guests spend a maximum of two years (initially a maximum of one year with an option to extend) at ETH Zurich (institute, laboratory, professorship), mainly on their own initiative, primarily for personal further education or a subject-specific collaboration .

Requirements

Compensation from ETH Zurich

In Switzerland, guests receive either no salary at all or only compensation that is lower than the salary for a regular position. The compensation should not exceed the cost of living. The following compensation can be paid to the guest:

Honorarium: The honorarium is paid directly to the guest. It is subject to social security and withholding tax. If the rent is paid by the guest, the amount must be included in the fee. The amount is entered in the fee field in the workflow.

Rent: The rent can be paid by ETH (unit/department/professorship) directly to the landlord. The rental costs are subject to social security and withholding tax and must therefore be offset against the fee. There is no direct payment to the guest. The amount is entered in the rent field in the workflow.

ETH scholarship: The scholarship is paid to the guest by means of “Zahlungsauftrag” (including the scholarship confirmation) by the finance department. Scholarships are not subject to social security or withholding tax. The amount is not entered in the workflow.

If the decision regarding compensation is taken after the workflow has been completed, you can contact the person responsible in HR Administration directly by e-mail.

Work and residence permit

A work and residence permit may be obtained through ETH for this guest category.

The document DownloadDocuments for guests (PDF, 131 KB) (in German) lists the documents required for each guest category and the regulations for work permits and family reunification.
